Political Update: Stirling Hinchliffe resigns as QLD Transport Minister, Cory Bernardi leaves Liberal Party
The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe MP has resigned as Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister moments after the release of the Strachan Report into Queensland Rail.
Mr Hinchliffe will retain his role as Leader of the House and it is believed he still intends to contest his seat of Sandgate at the next election.
A new Minister will be appointed shortly, in the interim The Deputy Premier, the Hon. Jackie Trad MP, will be Acting Transport Minister and Treasurer, the Hon. Curtis Pitt MP, will be Acting Commonwealth Games Minister.
In Federal politics, South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi has officially quit the Liberal Party. After months of speculation, Senator Bernardi confirmed in a speech to the Senate today that he has left the Liberal Party to establish his own Party known as the Australian Conservatives.
He claimed his new Party will focus on reducing the size of government and provide hope to Australians disillusioned with the current state of Australian politics.
Senator Bernardi’s defection takes the number of senate crossbenchers to eleven, potentially making it more difficult for the government to pass legislation in the future.
