I know it’s a cliché, but the world is run by those who show up. 

In recent months as I have travelled with clients to meet with stakeholders, a number of times opportunities have presented that were unexpected but welcomed.

By not being in the room, these opportunities would not have materialised. The value of continuous engagement with stakeholders or being in the room, is real and will bring benefits for clients, sometimes well beyond expectations.

A simple introduction, a preparedness to have conversations and a willingness to sometimes just go with what’s in front of you right now, is refreshing and can lead to new and interesting conversations, that then turn into opportunities.

Continuous engagement or advocacy that strengthens relationships and being present in the conversation is so important. I’ve often heard this referred to as ‘the full Bill Clinton’ – an anecdote used to describe how people felt when meeting the former President – ‘like you are the only person in the room’.

Experience tells me that being in the room, armed with the right information, to the right people at the right time will more often than not, result in a positive outcome.

This is important to all clients but particularly important when advocating on behalf of not-for-profit organisations, who have limited time and resources, and whose focus is often dedicated to member services rather than advocacy.
