South Australian politics is experiencing some high drama just four months out from a state election, writes Principal Consultant Ben Hindmarsh.

March included two parliamentary sitting weeks for our State pollies, including this week when legislation to permanently establish the Queensland Small Business Commissioner was passed, improving support and advice for Queensland’s 452,000 small businesses.  Other legislation considered included a further extension to the essential public health measures put in place to support Queensland’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic until the 31 October 2022.

May is Domestic Violence Awareness month and this certainly directed the signature positive announcement of the Palaszczuk Government this month, with the Premier and Attorney General Shannon Fentiman MP announcing a significant overhaul of Queensland law and police practices to better protect victims of domestic and family violence and hold perpetrators to account.

The last few weeks have obviously been dominated by the ‘integrity issues’ plaguing the government. After a deluge of negative media coverage for the government, the Premier has announced an inquiry into the handling of some of the concerns raised across the public service.

In the last week we’ve seen both the Integrity Commissioner and the Chair of the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) hand in their resignations. While this may appear as a negative development to some, the government will certainly breathe a sigh of relief.

Only minutes after our last edition of The Inside Word was released, the state political realm was shaken by the sudden resignation of then New South Wales Premier, Gladys Berejiklian.  After a short period of political manoeuvring, a leadership ballot for the NSW Liberals was won by 39-year-old father of six (soon to be seven) Dominic Perrottet.
